I changed my approach to STREET PHOTOGRAPHY for a week. This is what happened.
Sometimes, I need to give the visual side of my brain something else to think about when shooting on the street. I do this by changing the way I approach things. In this video, we take a look at a recent week of experimentation and how and why I changed my approach to street photography.

I usually shoot street with my Ricoh GR3x, 40mm or with my Z8 with 50mm and 80mm f1.8. I also got some fantastic street shots in Indonesia with my 100-400. Tack sharp and beautiful boke. Range focusing on the Z8 is a breeze. Use back button focus, manually focus to a focal range in the viewfinder eg 3m the leave back button focus alone and use the shutter button only which is now loked at 3m. Oh, I also use my 16-30mm f4 for street. Typically locked at 30mm.

Some great captures there Jeff. I love shooting street in Blackpool, it’s great for colour captures, especially along the sea front around the arcade fronts. You really really should try the 90mm focal length and do a video on that. It would be interesting to see you tackle it full on. Pushing yourself outside of a comfort zone and discussing why some shots work and some don’t. Might quiet that odd critic and their comments at the beginning ;)

Individual, identifiable photographic style is a rare gift among photographers, including professional photographers. It requires an innate, unique way of seeing (the gift) and the ability to apply/translate it to picture making (the skill). And of course there are varying degrees of expression of this gift/skill among photographers that possess it, from 'in development' to highly evolved - the latter of which can typically be seen in the works of famous photographers throughout photographic history, their individual works being immediately identifiable upon first glance. As a gift it cannot be taught as such. But some can train oneself to adopt a way of "seeing" and to apply it (fairly) consistently in their picture making. But the danger (likelihood?) here being that it comes across as contrived. One cannot fake a true gift.

I really love your creative endeavours. Especially the color experiment was really fruitful. Excellent decision to photograph something else than your typical b/w street scenes with all their gestures and spatial relationships. Using a M9P with your special colour sauce recipe helps, obviously. The image of the gentleman with the yellow shirt and straw head was a true success. Seeing the footage of you closing in I was wondering what you would come up with. Kudos! The deep blacks in a lot of these colour images remind me of Carravgio's chiarascuro technique (sorry to make you look up things on wikipedia 🤣). Despite all your technical explanations and visual experiments - I guess you know you are doing the work of a cultural historian. Blackpool and it's amusement parks are really telling a lot about British socienty in the 2020s. You could apply the same visual style in Singapoore or Belgium but you always come back to these locations and manage to take photographs of people on the streets without making fun of them like a certain British photographer colleague of yours seems to be doing from a middle class point of view.

    • @WalkLikeAlice

I have the 50mm 0.95 Noctilux on the 45mp Nikon Z9 and I’m completely new to street photography. I love this lens so much but it has been the most difficult lens I have ever used. I normally use 85mm for most of my photography (portrait work most of the time) and I have used an autofocus 50mm f1.2 in the past, but not for street photography. So the manual focus Leica 50mm 0.95 Noctilux has been very challenging to say the least. On my first day using it last week, of the 165 shots I took, only 5 were in focus. And those were lucky shots. The next day I took about 120 shots of which only 3 were in focus. Mind you, none of the photos were interesting in any way as I was just trying to get anything at all in focus if possible. It was then that I realized that trying to take photos of moving subjects at f1.2 or even f2.0 was impossible. I’ve watched quite a few videos of some very talented people who somehow are able to excel at this type of photography. So it’s a big learning process for me. On the third day walking around the city for over 4 hours with the lens set to f8 I was not able to take a single photo as I couldn’t find anything interesting no matter where I looked. Sometimes I just wonder if it is by chance that something out of the ordinary has to happen for an interesting photo to be taken. Walking around with a Noctilux on a Z9 means nothing if you can’t use it 😂😂😂 On the fourth day I was walking to a friend’s house and along the way I saw a motorcycle chained to a metal inside the fence of a property. It was the back of a small house that looked very old and the odd part was that the rear of the house faced the street. But the way that the motorcycle was positioned it looked as it was a dead end in front of the motorcycle. It would have been the coolest looking photo ever. But I didn’t have my camera with me! The next day I went looking for the street where the house was but couldn’t find it.

50mm isn’t easy on the street. Especially a manual focus lens. It takes years of practice to become proficient with it. Just get out there and practice even if you don’t get anything meaningful, those hours will stack up and increase your understanding of the lens.

Sooooo ... is it ethical? I mean, I would love to learn how to do that, but is it ... okay? Feels kinda wrong. When you put it up, you at least give people a chance to refuse. People do have a chance to refuse being photographed, no? Also.... Haselblat IS shot from the 'hip,' but you are still looking down at the viewfinder. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

    • @WalkLikeAlice
      @WalkLikeAlice 2 дні тому

Taking photos of people on the street has been part of photography for 100 years. It has given us a rich historical archive of life. Legally, certainly in my country, there is no issue. So then it’s down to “ethics”. If you feel it is wrong in some way to take someone’s photo on the street without permission, then don’t do it. It really is that simple. Shooting from the hip (in the context of this video) is a term for not bringing the camera to the eye and looking through the viewfinder. It’s not a term for the placement of the camera on the body. Ironically, I own three Hasselblads and they all have eye level viewfinders on them 🙂

It’s one of those mysteries of UA-cam. I figure that if you don’t like a video, don’t watch it. There’s no need to announce to everyone that you don’t like it.

I actually took the 21 to the farmers market last Saturday to combine with some hip shooting specifically for the low angle viewpoint. It was fun for a change and got some interesting images. High key light day led me to shoot mono and accentuate the shadows making these clearly not snapshots.

That’s exactly how I started with it. Many moons ago.

Love the shot of the girl with the compact mirror and backpack.

Nice work using the nonsense negativity of some random twat to segue into a positive philosophy 🤘 Unrelated irony though... several of the 90mm shots are my favorites here!

It’s amazing looking at the comments here, how many people like different things in the video. Some b/w. Some colour. Some 21. Some 90. That’s how it should be.

Very nice pictures, I especially like the one at 4:40 where the man is staring at his mobile phone and the four wig heads are staring out of the shop window. The pictures with the dudes holding your dog are also brilliant.

That first photo from Sarah has so much tonal depth, it pops incredibly. Why?

The light is good. The processing of the file isn’t too bad either. 😉
